The Coconut Industry in Belize
Belize is experiencing a renewed expansion in commercial coconut production, positioning the country as an emerging and competitive supplier within the global coconut market. According to the Belize Coconut Trade & Investment Prospectus (2025 Edition), approximately 18,660 acres are currently dedicated to coconut cultivation across the districts of Stann Creek, Cayo, Orange Walk and Toledo District.
Belize benefits from ideal agro-climatic conditions, including a tropical climate, fertile soils, consistent rainfall, and year-round sunshine. These natural advantages allow for sustainable coconut farming and steady production of high-quality green and dry coconuts.
The industry continues to grow through strong government and institutional support, including improved hybrid and disease-tolerant varieties, climate-smart agricultural practices, and expanded farmer training programs
Belize exports coconuts and coconut products to the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, and CARICOM markets, with export values surpassing BZD $2.4 million in 2024. Its proximity to North America, English-speaking workforce, and stable currency pegged to the U.S. dollar make Belize a strategic sourcing destination for international buyers.
Beyond fresh coconuts, the value chain includes coconut water, virgin and refined coconut oil, coconut milk and cream, fiber-based products, and other value-added goods.
